Question

Name the gas evolved when following are electrolysed :
Acidulated water.

Solution

The process of dissolving ionic compounds into their constituent components by delivering a direct electric current through the complex in a fluid form is known as electrolysis. At the cathode, cations are reduced, whereas anions are oxidized. An electrolyte, electrodes, and some type of external power supply are the most important components for conducting electrolysis.

Step1 : Electrolysis of Acidulated water.

When acidulated water is electrolyzed, oxygen gas is produced at the anode. OH travels towards the anode because it is negatively charged (positively charged electrode).

SO42-, OH-, and H+ are the ions present in the solution.

The +vecharge goes towards the cathode, whereas the-vecharge moves towards the anode.

At cathode:

2H+(aq)+2e-H2(g)

At anode:

OH-(aq)-e-OH(aq)4OH(aq)2H2O(l)+O2(g)

Oxygen gas is evolved at the anode.
