Question

Name the gas evolved when following are electrolysed
Concentrated hydrochloric acid

Open in App
Solution

  • The process of dissolving ionic compounds into their constituent components by delivering a direct electric current through the complex in a fluid form is known as electrolysis.
  • At the cathode, cations are reduced, whereas anions are oxidised.
  • An electrolyte, electrodes, and some type of external power supply are the most important components for conducting electrolysis.

Hydrogen acts as a cathode solution

Chlorine act as a anode solution

From the dilute acid, electrolysis produces hydrogen at the cathode and oxygen at the anode, but chlorine at the anode (of carbon) from the concentrated acid.

With a lit splint,

  • The () cathode gas colourless gas makes a squeaky pop – hydrogen
  • The (+)anode gas a pale green gas that transforms wet blue litmus red before bleaching it white – is chlorine.
