Question

Name the gas evolved when the following mixtures are heated:
(i) Calcium hydroxide and ammonium chloride
(ii) Sodium nitrate and ammonia chloride

Solution

(i) Reaction of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl):

  • Ammonia NH3 is generated on reaction of calcium hydroxide and ammonium chloride.
  • 2NH4Cl(aq)+Ca(OH)2(aq)HeatCaCl2(s)+2H2O(l)+2NH3(aq)
  • Therefore, ammonia gas is evolved when mixture of calcium hydroxide and ammonium chloride are heated.

(ii) Reaction of sodium nitrate(NaNO3) and ammonia chloride(NH4Cl):

  • Sodium chloride (NaCl) is formed on reaction of sodium nitrate and ammonium chloride.
  • NaNO3(aq)+NH4Cl(aq)NaCl(aq)+N2(g)+2H2O(l)
  • Therefore, nitrogen is evolved when mixture of sodium nitrate and ammonium chloride are heated.
