Question

Name the gas which burns with a pop sound. Give a reaction through which it can be produced.

Solution

Metal with acid reaction:

  • During the acids with metals, it forms salt and hydrogen gas, for which the general reaction can be written as:

Metal+AcidSalt+Hydrogen

  • It is known as a displacement reaction in which an element displaces another element in a compound i.e the hydrogen in acids is displaced by the metals to produce hydrogen gas.
  • Impure Hydrogen gas which basically contains traces of oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor burns with a pop sound as it is highly combustible nature of hydrogen.
  • When, a spark is introduced to impure Hydrogen gas, a highly exothermic reaction occurs.
  • Due to this a sudden temperature rise happens, and the gases expand on heating, which generally occurs very fast, in milliseconds.
  • This sudden expansion of these hot gases, causes a compression on the surrounding gases, producing a sound wave, that we hear as a pop sound.
  • Hence the chemical reaction of the production of hydrogen gas can be shown as :
    Zn(s)Zinc+H2SO4(aq)SulphuricacidZnSO4(aq)+H2(g)Hydrogenenergy

Hence, from the above explanation, we can conclude that the gas which burns with pop sound is Hydrogen gas.
