The thyroid gland is composed of two lobes which are located on either side of the trachea. The thyroid gland is composed of follicular cells which can synthesise 2 hormones, tetraiodothyronine and triiodothyronine. Tetraiodothyronine is also called as thyroxine. Iodine is an essential component for the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
