Islets of Langerhans:
The islets of Langerhans are the group of cells that make up the endocrine part of the pancreas gland.
There are 3 types of cells, each performing a specific function.
Beta cells - They secrete insulin which helps in bringing down the blood sugar level by depositing extra glucose in the liver and muscle cells in the form of glycogen.
Alpha cells - They secrete glucagon which increases the blood sugar level by converting stored glycogen in the liver to glucose.
Delta cells - Theysecrete somatostatin also called GHIH(growth hormone inhibiting hormone) which is an inhibitory hormone that inhibits the secretion of insulin and glucagon.
