Pulses are a type of
leguminous crop but pulse term refers to dried seed. Some examples of pulses include
beans, peas, dry beans like pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans, dry
peas, lentils, lupins, and peanuts, mung bean, golden gram, green gram. Pulses grow in pods and come
in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Pulses are very high in
protein and fibre, and are low in fat.
India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world. These are the major source of protein in vegetarian diet.
