RBC:

  1. Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are the type of cells that are present most abundant in the blood.
  2. They are also known as erythrocytes.
  3. RBCs are anucleate, biconcave, disc-shaped cells.
  4. These are formed in the bone marrow and are found in the blood.

Haemoglobin:

  1. RBCs/erythrocytes play an important role in the transport of oxygen to various tissues.
  2. It is mainly due to the presence of an iron-containing, red-colored pigment called haemoglobin.
  3. The presence of haemoglobin gives RBCs the red colour.
  4. The haemoglobin acts as an oxygen carrier molecule and is hence called respiratory pigment.
