The golden age for the Cholas is attributed to Rajaraja Chola. He conquered many parts of South India, captured parts of Sir Lanka, Maldives. In the North, he has touched Ganga and even defeated the ruler of Pataliputra. His achievements are include raiding the Malay archipelago.
This is period saw a number of beautiful temples which served as centres of economic activity too . Eg: Gangaikondacholapuram. They were also pioneers of good bureaucracy and centralised government. They did well in foreign trade which extended to China and South east Asia. The inscriptions belonging to this period shows the good level of literacy that existed.
