Components of the central nervous system:

  • The main components of central nervous system are the brain and the spinal cord.
  • Both these structures are enclosed by three protective layers called the meninges.

Functions:

  • The CNS is involved in integrating the information brought in by the sensory neurons.
  • It also directs the effector organs to perform a particular response by sending information through the motor neurons.
  • The brain plays an important role in controlling most of the bodily functions including awareness, movements, thoughts, speech and memory etc.
  • The Spinal cord controls the reflex actions occurring below the neck of the body helping in communication between the brain and the body.

Hence, the components of the central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord.
