Digestive system:

  1. The digestive system converts the foods we eat into their simplest forms, like sugar (glucose), amino acids (which help in making up protein) or fatty acids (helps in making up fats).
  2. The broken-down food is absorbed into the bloodstream and the nutrients are carried to each organ and cell in the body.
  3. The main organs of the human digestive system in the following order in the process of digestion are:

Mouth:

  1. The digestive process starts in the mouth.
  2. Salivary glands in the mouth make saliva and moisten food.
  3. So, it moves easily through the oesophagus.

Oesophagus:

  1. The oesophagus is a muscular, hollow tube that carries liquid and food from the throat to the stomach.
  2. It transfers food down to the stomach.

Stomach:

  1. The stomach digests food and moves it to the small intestine.
  2. It has three functions: temporarily store food, relax and contract to mix and break down the food.

Small intestine:

  1. It carries the digestion and absorption of food.
  2. Here, food is exposed to several digestive enzymes.
  3. The ileum has a large surface area that helps in the absorption of digested food.

Large intestine:

  1. The large intestine changes the waste from the liquid into faeces by absorbing water.
  2. Peristalsis moves the stool into the rectum

Rectum:

  1. The rectum acts as temporary storage for undigested food.
  2. It possesses smooth muscles and eliminates faeces from the body through the anus.

Anus

  1. Anus controls the exit of faeces from the body during an act of defecation.
