  1. Air pollution is the contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any physical, chemical or biological agent.
  2. It modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.
  3. Some common sources of air pollution include industrial facilities, household combustion devices, motor vehicles and forest fires, etc.

Air pollutant:

Air pollutants are natural and artificial airborne substances that are introduced into the environment in a concentration sufficient to have a measurable effect on the environment.

Major air pollutants:

  • Nitrogen oxides:
  1. These pollutants create ground-level ozone.
  2. It is harmful as a primary pollutant.
  3. Nitrogen oxides can cause lung irritation and weaken the immunity against respiratory infections such as pneumonia and influenza.
  • Carbon monoxide:
  1. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless and poisonous gas.
  2. It is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline
  3. It is emitted primarily from trucks and cars.
  • Sulphur dioxide:

Motor vehicles and power plants create this pollutant by burning fuels which have sulphur, especially diesel and coal.
