Solution

A mixture of two solids, both having different solubilities in the same solvent can be separated by fractional crystallization.

Steps of fractional crystallization:

  • The solution of two liquids with different solubilities is heated so as to make a concentrated solution.
  • Then the concentrated solution is allowed to cool. The one which is less soluble crystallizes first.
  • The crystals of less soluble substance are collected and the rest of the solution is again heated and cooled down slowly now the crystals of the second solid appear.

In this way, we can separate both solids.
