Name the method used for the refining of Nickel metal.

Open in App
Solution

Ni is refined by Mond's process. In this process, nickel is heated in the presence of carbon monoxide to form nickel tetracarbonyl, which is a volatile complex.
Ni+4CO330350K−−−−−−−−Ni(CO)4
Ni(CO)4450470K−−−−−−−−Ni+CO
Then, the obtained Ni(CO)4 is decomposed by subjecting it to a higher temperature (450470) to obtain Ni metal.
