Sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance called sebum. Sebum helps in maintaining the moisture level of the skin and makes the skin supple. In cold conditions, lower secretion of sebum makes the skin dry and rough while in hot and humid conditions oversecretion of sebum makes the skin oily. Oversecretion and accumulation of sebum can also cause pimples, acne, and blackheads.
