Question

Name the organ(s) in plants which participate in gas exchange.

Open in App
Solution

The organs in plants that participate in gas exchange are:

Stomata: These are tiny pores present in the epidermal layer of a leaf that help in the exchange of gases and transpiration.

  • Each stomatal pore is guarded by two bean-shaped (dicots) or dumbbell-shaped (monocots) cells called guard cells that control the opening and closing of stomata.
  • Stomata participate in the gas exchange in plants.

Lenticels: Lenticels are lens-shaped structures made up of numerous intercellular spaces found within the cells.

  • Due to the presence of large and numerous intercellular spaces, lenticels can help in the direct exchange of gases between the atmosphere and internal tissues.

Root Hairs: Root hairs are outgrowths of epidermal cells found at the tip of plant roots.

  • These are simple extensions of roots that do not have a waterproofing cuticle. As a result, simple diffusion of oxygen and carbon takes place through root hairs.
