CaC2+H2O

Solution

Acetylene (C2H2) is prepared by the action of water (H2O) on Calcium carbide (CaC2). Lumps of CaC2 are placed in a flask fitted with a thistle funnel and a delivery tube. Water (H2O) is dropped from the funnel and the acetylene (C2H2) evolved is passed through acidified Copper sulphate (CuSO4) solution to remove the impurities. It is then collected by the downward displacement of water (H2O) .

CaC2(s)Calciumcarbide+2H2O(l)WaterC2H2(g)Acetylene+Ca(OH)2(s)Calciumhydroxide
