C2H5OH+CH3COOHH2SO4Conc.

Open in App
Solution

When Ethanol (C2H5OH) is warmed with Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) in presence of a few drops of concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4), the sweet smell of Ethyl ethanoate i.e. Ethyl acetate (CH3COOC2H5) is produced.

The process of the formation of an ester i.e. Ethyl acetate (CH3COOC2H5) by the combination of Ethanol (C2H5OH) with Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) is known as esterification and the chemical reaction is as follows.

C2H5OHEthanol(l)+CH3COOH(s)EthanoicacidH2SO4Conc.CH3COOC2H5Ethylacetate(Ester)(l)+H2O(l)Water
