Question

Name the part of the chloroplast where the light reaction of photosynthesis takes place.

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis

  1. It is the process of synthesizing food by autotrophs in the presence of light.
  2. It has two phases: light reaction and dark reaction.

Light reaction of photosynthesis:

  1. The light reaction of photosynthesis is a solar energy-driven phenomenon.
  2. Chloroplast is a cellular organelle in the plant cell responsible for photosynthesis.
  3. Thylakoid discs of chloroplast have green pigment that absorbs the solar energy for light reaction of photosynthesis.
  4. Thus, the light reaction of photosynthesis occurs in the thylakoid membrane. It results in the photolysis of water molecules to release electrons.

Dark reaction of photosynthesis:

  1. It is a light-independent reaction that occurs in the stroma.
  2. It involves the reduction of carbon dioxide to glucose.
