Below are some important facts about Style and pistil: -

  1. Generally, flowers have two main parts i.e stamen and pistil. Stamen and pistil are the main parts of flowers seen in male and female flowers respectively.
  2. Corn is a pistillate flower. Pistillate flowers are those that don't have stamens. The tassels of corn cob represent the female part of the flower which is style and stigma.
  3. The corn cob plant has female flower clusters arranged on the stem which means it only blooms female flowers.
  4. These flowers are covered with spath. The style of these flowers is very long hence these overhangs the flowers in the form of a bunch which are known as tassels.
  5. The colour of the tassels can be green, purple or yellow. The tassels are present at the terminal or endpoint (apex) of the corn stalk.
  6. These tassels have a stigma on their terminal point. The tassels are long as they are involved in the production of large no. of pollen grains. These help to trap the pollen in the wind flow for wider dispersion and future progeny.
  7. A monoecious plant is the corn blossom. These plants have both male and female reproductive parts in the same plant, which is why the Greek words monos and oikos imply "single" and "home," respectively.
  8. Only female flowers are present on corn cobs, which are used for both male and female reproduction. They have protracted tassels that aid in dispersing pollen into the breeze.
