Question

Name the particle that constitutes the electric current in a metallic conductor.

Open in App
Solution

Concept used: Electric current

Prerequisite: Knowledge of flow of charges in a metallic conductor

  1. When a battery is connected to the conductor, then free electrons present in the conductor start moving from lower potential to a higher potential. If the free electron is absent in any material like an insulator, then the current will not flow as the current can only be carried by the free electrons.
  2. Thus, the free electrons constitute an electric current in the metallic conductor.
