1 - Alveoli, 2 - Diaphragm

The functions are

  • Alveoli or air sacs are tiny structures which are at the end of bronchioles. It is richly supplied with blood vessels and helps in gaseous exchange, namely oxygen and carbon dioxide gases.
  • Diaphragm is a dome shaped muscular structure at the base of the lungs. It increases or decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity and thus helps in inhalation and exhalation. Diaphragm contracts during inhalation and relaxes during exhalation and helps in breathing.
