Solution

The label 1 refers to root hair. The root hairs can absorb the water molecules. The water molecules are shown by the label 2. The water molecules which are present between the soil particles can be absorbed by the root hairs through the process of osmosis. The movement of water is due to the difference in the osmotic pressure. The osmotic pressure of water in roots is high and so the water enters the root hair cells. The water from the root hairs enters the cortex due to the difference in the osmotic pressure. The cortical cells are shown by the label 4. The water molecules are transported through the cortical cells by apoplast pathway. The label 3 shows the layer of endodermis. There are casparian strips made up of suberin which does not allows the water to move inside the layer of endodermis. There are passage cells which allows the movement of water through the endodermis. The movement of water is through symplast.
