Solution

a) The cerebrum or forebrain makes up to 75% of the brain by volume and 85% by weight.
  • It is divided into left and right hemispheres by a longitudinal groove.
  • The cerebrum is made up of a neural tissue called the cerebral cortex.
  • It is divided into four lobes which make up the left and right hemispheres-
1) The frontal lobe (conscious thought, decision-making).
2) The parietal lobe (integrates sensory information from the sense organs etc).
3) The temporal lobe (sense of smell and sound, the formation of long-term memory etc).
4) The occipital lobe (sense of sight).
  • The part of the brain which is responsible for memory is hippocampus which is a part of the limbic system which in turn lies in the medial temporal lobe.
b) The cerebellum is also known as the little brain.
  • It plays an important role in balancing and also receives information from the sensory organs and other parts of the brain for the regulation of motor movements.
  • It also coordinates muscular activity.
