Name the phenomenon of light due to which the swimming pool appears shallow.

Open in App
Solution

  1. A swimming pool appeared shallower than it really is due to the phenomenon of refraction of light.
  2. Refraction of light: The phenomenon of bending of light when light passes from one transparent medium to another at an angle, is called refraction of the light.
  3. The rays of light which are traveling from the floor of the pool bend away from the normal as rays emerge out of the water.
  4. These rays appear to come from the point I as shown which is above the floor and hence the swimming pool appears shallow.
