Question

Name the physical state of matter:

Which particles do not undergo diffusion?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion is the movement of individual molecules of a substance from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

  • The particles of gases are far away from one another having a very weak force of attraction among the particles.
  • Since, the particles are free to move, hence, the process of diffusion is the easiest among gases.
  • In liquids particles have space between them and diffusion takes place slowly.
  • In solids the particles are closely packed with each other and not free to move hence, diffusion does not take place in it.

So, in solids particles do not undergo diffusion.
