Europe has very unique physiography. Western and southern Europe have snow-covered peaks, gorges, valleys, and plateaus, while eastern Europe has consistent plain lands with limited change in relief.
Europe can be divided into four physiographic divisions:
Northwestern Highlands: This region has old mountain ranges with gentle slopes in the north that are crossed by many rivers.
North European Plains: This region has depositional plains formed by the deposition of sediments by various rivers.
Central Uplands: This region consists of old rocks, eroded mountains, and high plateaus. Most of the land is rocky with some patches of forest cover. The land near rivers is suitable for agriculture.
Southern Mountains: This region consists of young, folded mountain ranges with many snow-capped peaks. These mountains stretch from the Atlantic Coast in the west to the Caspian Sea in the east.
