Cocaine is an alkaloid which is extracted from the coca leaves. It is a drug which interrupts the conduction of impulses in nerves and acts as an anaesthetic. However, when it is ingested in small amounts it produces euphoria and increased mental alertness. In large amounts, it results in depression and convulsion which may lead to death.
