Bauxite is the principal ore of Al.
The leaching of Bauxite helps in the removal of impurities of silica (SiO2), iron oxide (Fe2O3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) from Bauxite. The powdered ore is heated with conc. NaOH solutions (45%) at 473 - 523 K. Al2O3 dissolves to form sodium meta-aluminate and silica dissolves to form sodium silicate leaving behind Fe2O3,TiO2 etc. which are filtered off. The filtrate is neutralised by passing CO2 when hydrated alumina separates out while sodium silicate remains in the solution.
Al2O3(s)Alumina+2NaOH(aq)+3H2O(l)473−523K−−−−−−→2Na[Al(OH)4](aq.)Sodium meta-aluminate
SiO2(l)+2NaOH(aq)473−523K−−−−−−→Na2SiO3(aq)Sodiumsilicate+H2O(l)
2Na[Al(OH)4](aq)+2CO2(g)→Al2O3.xH2O(s)↓+2NaHCO3(aq)
Hydrated alumina is filtered, dried and heated to give back pure Al2O3.
