Solution

Purification of Bauxite ore

1. Name of the purification process

It is the Baeyer's process that is used for the purification of impure oxides of Aluminum.

2. Chemical equations involved in Baeyer's process

  • The main impurities found in the impure oxide of AluminumAl2O3.2H2O are Iron(III) oxide,Fe2O3 and SilicaSiO2.
  • It is a method of chemical purification, a fine powder of ore is treated with hot Sodium hydroxideNaOH solution.
  • ImpureAl2O3.2H2O is amphoteric and gets dissolved in Sodium hydroxide solution whereas Fe2O3 is a basic oxide that is insoluble and removed by filtration.
  • Sodium AluminateNaAlO2 is formed which on further acidification produces a precipitate of Aluminum hydroxide,AlOH3 and releases sodium hydroxide in the solution.
  • The formed precipitate of Aluminum hydroxide further undergoes ignition at 1100oC and pure AluminaAl2O3 is extracted.
  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  1. Al2O3.2H2Os+2NaOHaq150-200oC2NaAlO2s+3H2Ol
  2. NaAlO2s+2H2Ol50-60oCNaOHaq+AlOH3aq
  3. 2AlOH3aq1100oCAl2O3s+3H2Ol

Hence, it is the Baeyer's process by which impure ore of Aluminum gets purified by using a concentrated solution of an alkali.
