Question

Name the process by which Al is obtained from purified bauxite.

Open in App
Solution

  • The process in which Al is obtained from purified bauxite is Hall's process by electrolysis.
  • During electrolysis, alumina decomposed into its constituent ions i.e. aluminium and oxide ions.

2Al2O3(aq)Electrolysis4Al3+(aq)+6O2-(aq)

  • At the cathode, aluminium ions undergo oxidation to give aluminium atoms.

4Al3+(aq)+12e-4Al(s)

  • At the anode, the oxide ion undergoes reduction to evolved oxygen.

6O2-(aq)-12e-3O2(g)

  • In Hall-Heroult's process, pure Al2O3 is mixed with CaF2 or Na3AlF6 which lowers the melting point of the mixture and enhances conductivity.

Hence, Al is obtained from purified bauxite by Hall-Heroult's process.
