Question

Name the process by which root hair absorb water from the soil.

Solution

Osmosis:

Osmosis is a process of diffusion of water molecules from a region of low solute concentration towards a region of high solute concentration across a semipermeable membrane.

Absorption of water by roots:

  1. Water absorption by roots occurs when roots come in contact with soil.
  2. The water molecules diffuse from the soil into the root hair cells through osmosis due to the concentration difference between the soil and the root hairs.
  3. The water potential of soil is high as compared to that of the root hairs.
  4. This difference leads to the absorption of water molecules from the soil into the roots and then the water molecules enter the xylem tissue for further transportation to other plant parts.
