Solution

Fermentation:

  • Fermentation is a process in which the pyruvic acid undergoes an enzyme-catalyzed metabolic reaction to form ethanol.
  • In a cell, the glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid in a series of reactions known as glycolysis. Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell.
  • The pyruvic acid has 3 different fates that totally depend upon the availability of oxygen in the cell, in aerobic conditions, carbon dioxide is released and energy in the form of ATP is stored. In anaerobic conditions, the pyruvic acid undergoes either lactic acid fermentation or fermentation.
  • In anaerobic conditions, pyruvic acid is converted into ethanol and this reaction is called fermentation.
