Solution

Meninges:

  1. The brain is protected by three layers of membranes made up of connective tissue called meninges.
  2. The pia mater is the innermost layer that tightly adheres to the surface of the brain and the spinal cord.
  3. The arachnoid mater is the middle layer which has a web-like appearance.
  4. The dura mater is the outermost layer which is the thickest membrane lying closest to the skull.

Hence, the layers protecting the brain are called the meninges.
