Question

Name the product formed when hydrogen burns in air with a pale blue flame.

Solution

Pure hydrogen gas burns with a pale blue flame with no pop-up sound. Impure hydrogen gas burns with a pop-up sound because of impurities present in it

In a flame of pure hydrogen gas, burning in air, the hydrogen (H2) reacts with oxygen (O2) to form steam which on condensation forms water (H2O). This reaction is highly exothermic (i.e in this process heat is released). It can be shown by the following reaction.

2H2(g)+2O2(g)2H2O(g)
