Solution
Respiratory pigment:
The pigment that helps in carrying oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body is known as respiratory pigment.
Hemoglobin is the iron-containing respiratory pigment in humans and is present in the red blood cells.
Hemoglobin is a tetrameric protein and contains the heme prosthetic group attached to each subunit.
The characteristic red color of red blood cells is due to the presence of hemoglobin.
When this pigment binds with oxygen for transportation, it is called oxyhemoglobin. Some amount of carbon dioxide is also transported back via hemoglobin as carbaminohaemoglobin.
Each hemoglobin binds with 4 oxygen molecules at a time.
