Discovery:
Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin was serendipitous. He noticed a clear zone around the Penicillium mould whereas the rest of the petri plate had bacterial colonies.
Role as an antibiotic:
Ernst Chain and Howard Florey identified and devised methods to increase the production and purification of penicillin by the mould. Penicillin was the first antibiotic that was used to treat soldiers during World War II.
Nobel prize:
Fleming, Ernst and Florey were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945.
