Question

Name the site (s) of pyruvate synthesis. Also, write the chemical reaction wherein pyruvic acid dehydrogenase acts as a catalyst.

Solution

Site of pyruvate synthesis :

Pyruvate or pyruvic acid is the end product of glycolysis.
Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell.
Thus, pyruvate is also synthesized in the cytoplasm.

Role of pyruvic acid dehydrogenase:

Pyruvic acid dehydrogenase is the enzyme that performs two functions.

It decarboxylates and then oxidizes pyruvic acid to form acetyl CoA.

Thus, it catalyzes the conversion of pyruvic acid to acetyl CoA andCO2.
