Solution

Blood

  1. Blood is a connective tissue that circulates throughout our body through arteries and veins. It is a colloidal solution i.e. composed of multiple subparts. It is a homogenate mixture that can broadly be classified into two parts i.e. Fluid part and the cellular part.

The solid components of blood

The solid components of blood are red blood corpuscles, white blood corpuscles and blood platelets.

Red blood corpuscles

  1. Red blood corpuscles are disc-shaped, anucleate cells that contain haemoglobin pigment.
  2. Haemoglobin is an iron-containing pigment that binds to oxygen and help in its transport.
  3. Red blood cells (RBCs) are carriers of oxygen. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body.

White blood corpuscles

  1. White blood corpuscles are devoid of any pigment. These are of various types.
  2. The main function of white blood corpuscles is to destroy pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and pathogens in order to protect the body from diseases.

Platelets

  1. The blood platelets are the tiny fragments of special cells formed in the bone marrow. Platelets do not have nuclei.
  2. Platelets are responsible for the clotting of blood. They prevent loss of blood by creating coagulation of blood at the place of wound or injury.
