Meiosis is the characteristic division of reproductive cells. It is also called reduction division because the parent cell produces four daughter cells, each having half the number of chromosomes present in the parent cell. It involves two successive nuclear division occurring one after the other, viz., meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis II is an equational division like mitosis and takes place simultaneously, in both the nuclei in which chromosomes divide or duplicate to form four haploid nuclei.
