Question

Name the stage of mitosis where the following occurs:

  1. Spindle fibres appears.
  2. Chromosomes are lined up in one plate at equator.
  3. Centrioles start moving apart.
  4. Nuclear membrane is formed.
  5. Cytokinesis begins.

Solution

(1) Spindle fibers

  1. During cell division, the mitotic spindle is formed by a network of filaments.
  2. This network of filaments is called spindle fibers.

Prophase

  1. This is the first phase of meiosis.
  2. The chromatin network of the nucleus starts thickening into the distinctive chromosome.
  3. Spindle fibers appear during this phase.
  4. The nucleolus and nuclear membrane start disappearing at this phase.

(2) Chromosomes

  1. A thread-like structure is found inside the nucleus of cells.
  2. It is made up of DNA and proteins.

Metaphase

  1. During this phase, chromosomes arrange themselves in the equatorial plane.
  2. Chromosome gets attached to the spindle using its centromere.

(3) Centrioles

  1. In most eukaryotic cells, there will be a small, cylindrical cell organelle seen near the nucleus that divides perpendicularly during mitosis.
  2. These are called centrioles.

Anaphase

  1. Centrioles appear during anaphase.
  2. This is the shortest phase of mitosis.
  3. The centromere splits and daughter chromatids are moved to opposite poles of the cell.
  4. As the centromere drags the arms of chromosomes, chromosomes appear to be V-shaped.

(4) Nuclear membrane

  1. Double layered membrane protective membrane around the nucleus.

Telophase

  1. A nuclear membrane is formed during the telophase of mitosis.
  2. Telophase is essentially the reverse of osmosis.
  3. The end of polar migration of daughter nuclei marks the beginning of telophase.

(5) Cytokinesis.

  1. Division of cytoplasm results in two daughter cells.

Anaphase

  1. Cytokinesis starts during the nuclear division phase of mitosis called anaphase.
  2. Centrioles appear during anaphase.
  3. This is the shortest phase. As the centromere splits, daughter chromatids move to opposite ends.
