The steps in the manufacture of common sugar from sugarcane are as given below.
1. Juice extraction
a. Milling
b. Diffusion
2. Juice clarification (removes suspended solids ( mud, waxes, fibres) from the juice).
3. Juice evaporating ( concentrates the juice to a thick syrup)
4.Crystallisation and centrifuging (separates sugar crystals from the mother liquor)
5. Sugar drying
6. Packaging and delivery
1. Juice extraction:
a. Milling
The juice is squeezed from the cane under high pressure between heavy iron rollers.
b. Diffusion:
Sucrose is extracted from the cane with the use of imbibtion but without the squeezing by mills.
