Solution

The steps of cleaning water by water supply board are :

a. Screening - The water from lakes and rivers is passed through screens that remove most large impurities such as stones and leaves.

b. Sedimentation - Water is then allowed to stand in large settling tanks. Here, heavy insoluble particles settle at the bottom. In some cases, loading is also done to remove suspended impurities.

c. Filtration - The water is then filtered through sand beds to remove most of the small insoluble particles.

d. Chlorination - Next, Chlorine is added in small amounts to kill germs in the water.
