The first layer of protection for the brain is a hard bony skull.

Meninges:

The second layer of protection for the brain is meninges. The meninges is a three layered protective connective tissue that encloses the brain. The layers are the following:-
  • Dura mater is the outer thick and strong layer.
  • Arachnoid membrane is the middle thin and avascular layer.
  • Pia mater is the innermost thin and vascular layer.
Cerebrospinal fluid :

The cerebrospinal fluid is present in the subarachnoid space and acts as a mechanical shock absorbing cushion.
