Solution

  1. Atoms are the building blocks of matter. Atoms are too small to be seen even with a microscope.
  2. Atoms were considered solid, indivisible, and indestructible particles.
  3. Later, Sir J. J. Thomson, Lord Ernest Rutherford, James Chadwick, Niels Bohr, etc. showed that atoms are made up of still smaller particles.
  4. The most important of such particles are electrons, protons, and neutrons.
  5. An electron is a negatively charged particle.
  6. A proton is a positively charged particle.
  7. A neutron does not carry any electrical charge. Thus, neutrons are electrically neutral.
  8. The nucleus consists of protons and neutrons.
