Question

Name the substance which liberates Carbon dioxide from Sodium carbonate.

Open in App
Solution

Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is a metal carbonate. Usually, there is a reaction between metal carbonate and acids to produce water H2O, Carbon dioxide CO2 and Metal carbonate. An acid can be used for liberating Carbon dioxide CO2 from Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). When a solution of Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) reacts with dilute Hydrochloric acid HCl, then Carbon dioxide CO2 is released. The other products are Sodium chloride NaCl and Water H2O.

The balanced chemical reaction is shown as:

Na2CO3(aq)+2HCl(aq)2NaCl(aq)+H2O(l)+CO2(g)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumWaterCarboncarbonateacidchloridedioxide

Thus, Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the substance that liberates carbon dioxide from sodium carbonate.
