Question

Name the technique by which several dyes present in black ink can be separated?

Solution

There are different techniques present to separate components present in a mixture.

One of the methods is chromatography-

  • It involves two phases i.e mobile phase and the stationary phase.
  • The sample is dissolved in a particular solvent and acts as the mobile phase through the stationary phase.
  • The stationary phase can be paper (paper chromatography) or silica packed in a glass tube (column chromatography).
  • To separate dyes present in black ink, we can use paper chromatography.

Steps:-

  1. On a chromatographic paper place a drop of black ink on the baseline and dry it.
  2. Suspend the paper on solvent which is taken in a jar, when the solvent rises blue, red, and yellow separate into different heights.
  3. Depending upon the solubility of dyes on solvent, one which is readily dissolved in solvent moves farthest.

Therefore, paper chromatography can be used to separate dyes present in black ink.
