Solution

  1. The three categories in which the elements are classified are as follows:
    1. Metals
    2. Non-metals
    3. Metalloids

Metals: These elements form cation by the loss of an electron. Therefore, metals are called electro-positive elements.

  • Examples of metals are: Copper (Cu), Silver (Ag), Iron (Fe), Mercury (Hg), etc are some typical metals.
  • Exception: Mercury is the metal that is found in a liquid state and the remaining metals are found in a solid-state.

Non-metals: These elements generally gain electrons and form anions. Therefore, non-metals are called electron-negative elements.

  • Examples of non-metals are: Carbon (C), Sulphur (S), Bromine (Br), Hydrogen (H), Nitrogen (N), etc.

Metalloids: The elements that act like both metals and non-metals are called metalloids.

  • Examples of metalloids: Boron (B), Silicon (Si), Arsenic (As), etc are some of the metalloids.

Therefore, the three categories in which the elements are classified are Metals, Non-metals, Metalloids.
