The three categories of musical instruments are:

Stringed instruments –

1. These instruments have an air chamber to enable increasing the loudness of the sound produced by plucking strings.
2. The pitch is altered by altering the length of the vibrating portion of the string.
3. E.g. guitar, sitar, violin

Wind instruments –

1. In this sound is produced by a vibrating air column within the instrument.
2. The pitch is altered by altering the length of the vibrating air column.
3. E.g. flute, trumpet, harmonica.​

Percussion instruments –

1. Sound is produced by vibrating skin or membrane.
2. Pitch can be altered to some extent by increasing or reducing the tension of the membrane or by changing the force with which the membrane is struck.
3. E.g. tabla, drum and dholak.
