Salivary glands:

  1. There are three pairs of salivary glands that release their secretion in the mouth.
  2. Parotid glands, Sublingual glands, and Submandibular glands.
  3. Parotid glands are located beneath each ear.
  4. Submandibular glands are located at the end of the lower jaw.
  5. The sublingual gland is located below the tongue.
  6. The watery fluid secreted by the salivary gland is called saliva.
  7. Saliva is mainly composed of water, mucus and an enzyme called salivary amylase or ptyalin.
  8. This enzyme acts on the molecules of starch present in food and converts them into maltose.
